Irma Álvarez-Laviada

 

Aristotle thought of space in terms of the place that things occupy. Between that now ancient claim and the theories of present-day quantum physics, which ask us to envisage the dissolution of space-time as we were wont to think of it, are gathered not only the most distinguished figures in physics, philosophy, history and, of course, art, but also those of us who try in our modest fash- ion to arrive at something like a viable descrip- tion of the world.

This is the premise on which Irma Álvarez-Laviada (Gijón, 1978) has accepted the FCAYC’s invitation to investigate, to intervene in a specific way in the exhibition gallery and to present other senso- rial relationships that touch on the idea of space, one of the lines of work she has developed in the greatest depth and intensity throughout her artistic career. In The Space between Things she rises to the challenge of adumbrating the quali- ty of space/place (to which Heidegger dedicated so much attention) by means of a situation that engages with the transience inscribed in our surroundings and with the aid of materials that frequently point towards the crude reverse of the very idea of space, camouflaged within what might seem to pertain to the strict exercise of its construction.

Compiled between the aluminium, plywood, plaster and glass walls of FCAYC, site specific and at the disposal of the visitor, is a complete index of processes, conditions and materials: paper, ink, resin, foam, sheet, density, thickness, bending... An index, however, whose roots are far from here, in the refuge for all that is transient – situations, materials – that is found, in this case, in an art- ist’s studio.

Substances (thought, worked) alien to any objec- tivity, chosen with painstaking care and precision by Irma Álvarez-Laviada, infiltrated by her hand, which are exposed to the commutations of the image and the ways in which this determines our experience. Substances that become body – things – and bear witness to the correlative im- plicit in the work of this artist: to seek out a site, to produce space, to distinguish a place.

Afirmaba Aristóteles que el espacio es el lugar que ocupan las cosas. Entre ese aserto y las teorías actuales de la física cuántica, que nos animan a imaginar la disolución del espacio-tiempo tal y como lo concebimos, se dan cita no solo los nombres más distinguidos de la física, la filosofía, la historia y, por supuesto, el arte, sino también nosotros, el anónimo conjunto de quienes tratamos de alcanzar algo semejante a una descripción cierta del mundo.

Sobre esta base, Irma Álvarez-Laviada (Gijón, 1978) ha aceptado la propuesta de FCAYC para investigar e intervenir de manera específica en la sala de exposiciones para presentar otras relaciones sensibles en torno a la idea de espacio, una de las líneas de trabajo desarrolladas con mayor profundidad e intensidad a lo largo de su trayectoria. En El espacio entre las cosas afronta el desafío de señalar la cualidad del espacio-sitio –sobre el que abundó Heidegger–, a través de una situación que incide en la transitoriedad inscrita entre cuanto nos rodea y con la ayuda de materiales que apuntan, con frecuencia, hacia el reverso crudo de la propia idea de espacio, camuflados entre lo que podría parecer más propio del estricto ejercicio de su construcción.

Compilado entre las paredes de aluminio, Plywood, yeso y cristal de FCAYC, site specific y a disposición del visitante, se ubica un índice completo de procesos, condiciones y materiales: papel, tinta, resina, espuma, lámina, densidad, espesor, flexión... Un índice que, sin embargo, tiene su raíz lejos de aquí, en el refugio para todo aquello transitorio –situaciones, materiales– que supone, en este caso, el estudio de una artista.

Sustancias, pensadas, elaboradas, ajenas a cualquier objetividad, escogidas con minuciosidad y precisión por Irma Álvarez-Laviada, infiltradas por su mano, que se exponen a las conmutaciones

de la imagen y los modos en que esta determina nuestra experiencia. Sustancias que se hacen cuerpo –cosas– y que ponen de manifiesto el correlato implícito en la labor de la artista: buscar lugar, producir espacio, distinguir sitio.
